The Big Disconnect

I don't find this sort of thing surprising, considering all the bullshit we've been fed for years now.

  • I managed to secure a volunteer position tomorrow night (8 - midnight) with a friend of mine. My heart has been breaking all week; I need to do something.

After sending in my email request to volunteer, I got a pretty scary email from the organizers that put some butterflies in my stomach about the whole idea of spending four hours in a stadium full of really desperate, angry people, though. We were advised to not bring any valuables just ourselves. Particularly, no cell phones (i'm sure you can imagine why). A couple of things we were advised to bring along was some anti-bacterial gel and some baby wipes. The place is pretty grimey, we were told.

I just got a call about thirty minutes ago from my old high school buddy telling me that he picked up my volunteer t-shirt.

  • Amber and I are in Houston for a wedding this weekend and hope to score volunteer positions tomorrow. I called the Red Cross today and if they don't get back with us for a downtown position I think we may be able to get slots at the church around the corner from my sister's place. The number of shelters is pretty amazing--they are advertising ones as far away as Brenham.

  • Night volunteers are needed at the Reliant Complex. So Killy you should be needed. We just got back feeling a little bit dejected, and useless. They have enough volunteers till about 6 PM tonight.
There is a bit of rubber-necking involved.
A couple hundred people waiting inside Reliant Park waiting for assignments. 40 or so people were picked out for an 8 hour shift. after being there for an hour we were finally given jobs and while in route to the dome our number of 20 was swelled to 45 by some of the earlier group of 40 who felt too important because they were given a job of feeding other volunteers. They didnt want to feed healthy volunteers they wanted to get into the Dome.
When we finally got to our destination we sat around for 15 minutes looking around us.
We saw other groups of volunteers with nothing to do.
We left. People were arguing for jobs with the attitude "I was here first."
People are really needed for night shifts.
