Automobile-Sharing coming to Austin?

Flexcar, which already has a partnership with a nonprofit car operator in Chicago, will next go to Atlanta; Austin, Tex.; Boston; and New York City.

A service like this would be great for no-car-having, taggart-and-todd-calling, bicycle-riding,foot-monkey like myself.

  • The Sorensens are initiating a car sharing program of their own ..... Since we have more than we know what to do with (one each!) we are happy to share our over abundance of autos with anyone with the name of Pablo Mercado-It gets COLD on that scooter!

  • would that work in houston? would it be cost effective for someone who lives in the woodlands and has to drive in everyday (1hour+). I guess it would have to be done on a really massive scale...

  • also, in response to kill, I think the idea is that you would rent the car when you had to go to Ikea for example, but you would carpool or take public transport for your routine travel needs.

  • yes, we got a new Honda Civic, It's cute, but best of all, it's mine (when Taggart's not driving it)! 2 doors, manual trans, dark greenish grey, good gas mileage!

  • I LOOKED INTO THIS OPTION AS I WAS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING GETTING A SECOND CAR. AS OF RIGHT NOW MIGHT COMMUTE IS 45 - 90 MINUTES BOTH WAYS. SO I WENT TO THEIR WEB SITE TO LOOK AT COST. IT IS NOT VERY CHEAP AND NOT VERY TIME EFFICIENT ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT TO DRIVE IT TO WORK AND LET IT SIT ALL DAY. IT MIGHT MAKE SENCE IF IT IS ERRAND BASED - AND YOU DON'T HAVE ANY FRIEND TO SHARE WITH YOU.
