Insult-y goodness

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.

Piara Powar, national co-ordinator for the anti-racism group Kick It Out told Five Live, said: "If there was a racial slur then Fifa needs to act."

Keith Hackett, head of referees in England, said that if it can be proved that Matterazzi racially abused the Frenchman, then Fifa should take retrospective action for "the good of the game."

    I clearly saw...

    "Son of a mother-less goat."

  • You bring somebody's momma into it...Then You're asking for it.

He had it coming. It's just a shame he didn't lose some teeth in the process.

    Vive Le France!

  • I don't know, insult or not it was inexcusable...I was talking to Liz about the missing element of sports, field dialogue. It is a very important part of how the game is played or not played right? What someone says on the field does not represent how someone really feels.
It's just A GAME, albeit a important one that involves billions of dollars and national pride but really when was the last time world crisis-es were solved on the field.
Maybe he didn't know his mother was in the hospital, I am sure he knew Zidane was a reactionary figure who has exploded before........hence a slur or insult yield a frustrated or distracted error.
I am sure worse things have been said.

  • Yes, even I would have to think long and hard to come up with something more harsh than "Your mother is a terrorist whore" who just happens to be in the hospital at the time...
Taggart, you have gotta be kidding me with trying to glaze that remark over as sportsmanlike...
My momma ain't on the field so leave her out of it.

  • Hmm, sorry still in disagreement, no-one thinks that much ill will of you if you slide-tackle with your cleets a little too high but insult your mother and "oooohhhh".
What I am trying to say is that saying insulting ones mothers, racial slurs, and insults in general are common on the field it's just that the public are not as exposed to it as the flagrant physical fouls.
I mean please am I supposed to get more angry that players are insulting each others mothers or throwing elbows? or even faking fouls........
Where is the moral high-ground here....I dont think it's anywhere in sight.
Zidane is a brilliant player......and I am sure he was protecting his mothers integrity the last time he head butted and opponent (and when he stomped on that other guy too)

  • I can see you point on this, but at the same time I am not advocating any use of cleating or elbow throwing or even head butting for that matter, but at the same time, when you call someone a racial slur or insult someone's mom...That's not trash-talk. That's something else entirely. The Italian should have been thrown out of the game right along with Zidane. There's no place for calling someone's mom a terrorits whore. Trash talk has a time and a place but there are limits to what constitues trash-talk.

  • Sending-Off Offences

A player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offences:

    1. is guilty of serious foul play
    2. is guilty of violent conduct
    3. spits at an opponent or any other person
    4. denies an opponent a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
    5. denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
    6. uses offensive, insulting or abusive language
    7. receives a second caution in the same match

According to these rules, John is right. The Italian should have been taken off the field at the same time providing a ref heard the offensive remark, which is pretty doubtful even though there are ball mics placed alongside the field every few yards it seemed.

  • Chicago Tribune says
    he insulted my mother

By Blogger CarolinaDivina, at 3:27 PM

  • I THINK THAT......AT THE END OF A LONG CAREER DOMINATED BY CALM AND COLLECTED PLAY THAT ELEVATED THE GAME...MAYBE HE REALIZED.....I DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH ANY MORE CRAP.

    I'M GOING OUT WITH A FU**ING BANG.

AS THE FRENCHMAN I PLAY WITH SAID....FRANCE LOVES A LOSER.

NO MATTER WHAT....ZIDANE IS THE HERO IN THIS.

By Blogger colin, at 4:28 PM

  • hhhhhhhmmmmmm.............
    HE SAID, SHE SAID.....

Will we ever know what was said....Materazzi says he didnt mention his mother, race, politics, or religion.

"I didn't insult his mother. I lost my mother when I was 15 years old and still get emotional when I talk about it. Naturally, I didn't know that his mother was in hospital but I wish her all the best. Zidane is my hero and I have always admired him a lot."

Zidane says Materzzi insulted his sister and mother over and over again.......

I am not saying what anyone did was right....especially Zidane because it was so flagrant but If Materazzi's insult was common bile than it was nothing more than trying to sneak a verbal foul past the refs......tactics....but your right JP they were both idiots.
