Presentation on Comics

Hey everybody, hope you're all doing well. Thought I'd pop in and share a presentation I gave last weekend, for anyone who's interested. It's called "Frame, Sequence, Medium: Comics in Plurimedial and Transnational Perspective," and I gave the talk at the German Association for American Studies conference in Regensburg. Take care.

  • What in the hell does 'Plurimedial' mean? I guess if i had to break it down (before watching the video and/or looking the word up): pluri (many?), medial (vehicles of communication?)

Glad to see you are still going strong, Shane!

  • Hey Killy, that's pretty much it. Just want to differentiate between multimedial (using several media for a single expression), transmedial (using several media to articulate a single fictional universe), and plurimedial (which is more fractured temporally and/or "spatially" in using several media that are in communication with one another but don't completely mesh: for example, Superman comics, films, TV, etc.).
    Good to hear from you!

  • Howdy, shane; just got a chance to watch this; thank you very much for sharing it. It is wonderful to hear from you.

  • Hey Paul, thanks! So where are you nowadays? Last I remember reading, you had moved back to Texas, I think. But that was a long time ago... I'm really starting to miss Texas and the States in general (in some ways and on some days). We had hoped to come this year, but it proved to be impossible financially (plane tickets cost like double their "normal" price this year). Anyway, I've seen here on the blog that you come over to Europe pretty regularly. If you're ever in or near Germany, let me know. Would be great to see you again. (Still waiting for Ryan to make his road trip across Europe too...) Anyway, great to hear from you too!

  • (sorry for the double post. just subscribing to comments so I don't miss a reply...)

  • Hi!

I am in living in Washington D.C. these days; I have been out here for about 2 years now and don't get back to Texas as nearly as I would like either...

Speaking of frame, sequence and medium I have been reading a pretty good B.D. called "Blacksad". The art is lush and lovely watercolor and the stories are entertaining hard-boiled-maltese-falcon style tales set in 50's America. Recommended.

  • Hey, thanks for the recommendation. I just googled a bit, and that looks great! I'm working with a couple of colleagues on an edited volume on "Transcultural and Transnational Perspectives on Comics and Graphic Narratives," and that looks like it would be a perfect subject... Besides, just looks like fun. I'll definitely check it out! Are you reading the Dark Horse edition?
