Contemplation by killy
Contemplation, a photo by killy on Flickr.

It's really difficult to believe that everything that happened this year ... happened this year. It feels like an eternity has passed and yet the memories and feelings from these events make them real and present every moment of the day. Time is an illusion. The past and the present and the future are standing in front of me and I can see each of them equally clear.

The Jones' have made their way back to Texas after a lengthy experiment with northern livin in Cleveland. A new home is not the only new thing in their lives - they've also have a relatively new addition to the family, Hazel.

Drove to Austin a couple of weeks ago, to get some photos of Hazel a few days before she turned 1.

For those of you who aren't familiar with my extended family, this is Ezra. Son of Maru who is sister of my wife, Carol. It was discovered after a bout of chest pains and irregular fatigue that he had a congenital heart condition. Recently, he underwent surgery to correct that condition. Four days after having a very successful major heart surgery, Ezra is home recovering.

Due to not so ideal circumstances, in a not so ideal (lighting) situation, we found a more than ideal place to photograph my niece, Lisa.

And as much as i enjoy this photo, If i could go back and do this again, I would do so much more so much differently.

Last week I scheduled some time to photograph a neighbor of mine that i've been meaning to photograph for some time now. I think it was pretty successful.

It's just so hot. So hot.

It's a day fit for just laying around. For those of your not here in Houston, I hope you are fortunate enough to have weather you can exist in.

What I Know

Detective by killy

So ... is anyone out there? Is everyone alive? Here is a list of the people who are attached to this blog and what i know about them:

Taggart: Living in South Houston as a photographer with his lovely wife, Liz and two girls Carmen and Ruby. He is not aging well.

Adolph: Lives two blocks away from Taggart with his lovely wife Amber and two children Fraser and Genevieve. JD Salinger was more social than he is.

Todd: Living in Austin. He texts me back every now and then, so i know he's alive.

Colin: He and his entire family (Laura, Chela and Hannah Pearl) were briefly lost in his beard. They have since been found. Laura continues to paint; Hannah is probably swimming in scholarship money and Chela is a mystery.

Ryan: He's buying a mutha fucking house, ya'll! Party time.

Shane: He lives in Germany with his wife and child and thinks deep Frankenstein thoughts. Looks exactly the same.

Carolina: Lives with her three children in Northwest Houston. Is awesome.

Pablo: lives somewhere on the East Coast and sits at a computer most of the time. Travels without telling anyone. Sees family on holidays. Posts comments to blogs and photos using only one word most of the time.

Claire: Mom to adopted baby girl and wife to beer brewmaster. Still obsessed with vacuuming. Waiting for a train photo for her living room.

John: living in Austin. As far as i know, never ever sees Todd, so he's just like everyone else in Austin in that way. Otherwise, FABULOUS. Recently appeared on tv on a show about haunted houses - specifically Jennifer(Kabay)'s home. Conclusion: looks good on camera.

Amber Freda: Lives on Long Island with illustrator Anthony Freda and their son, Antonio. Their home is BEAUTIFUL. My gosh.

I've gotten a few gigs lately. One of my favorite places to shoot is the Houston Symphony. Normally, I shoot as an employee of Catchlight Group as an event photographer. One of these days I hope to get hired directly for musician portraits. One day ...

In the meantime, here is a panorama i did of the Houston Symphony on Thursday evening, March 28th during the Salute to Educators Concert. This photo depicts the the winner from the Houston Symphony League Concerto Competition, Anna Han, performing Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1

Insanity by killy

Recently acquired a second SB-600 and it occured to me to try and compare the output from the Nikons and the LumoPros.

Paola and Adolfo helped.

Turns out, in this completely unscientific approach, the outputs are very similar. The two on the floor are the LP160s and the ones up top are the Nikon SB-600s.

The end of the Journey

MD Anderson Cancer Center by killy
MD Anderson Cancer Center, a photo by killy on Flickr.
It is with a heavy heart that I have to report that Dezma has begun the end of her journey with Leukemia. The last round of chemo, unfortunately, had little effect on the disease. She has been discharged from the hospital and will continue to take oral chemo and antibiotics to keep the disease in check for a time, but eventually in the coming weeks Dezma's time with us will come to an end.
Deigo and Dezma Benitez
Keep her in your thoughts and prayers and for goodness sake, live your lives to the fullest every day.

Fear of Life

Adolfo Fidel Chavez IV by killy
Adolfo Fidel Chavez IV, a photo by killy on Flickr.
i am scared of life. so much so that i don't do anything. ideas that spark to life in my head are quickly extinguished by fear. fear of the unknown, fear of failure. i have become afraid of people. i have become afraid of interacting. when i am in the world, i don't engage. today as i walked to lunch on a sidewalk, i looked at no one. i rarely talk to anyone and when i do it's in a very superficial way and i hate it. I hate words as they come out of my mouth because they taste as if they've been run through a filter.

I am plagued with self-doubt and loathing. it is something that i can't get past. i focus on those things which i have failed at and this paralyzes me. it is a poison in my mind that breeds ignorance. i can't bring my limbs to move once i am home. I retreat into my head, sit and i stare and i think, trying to think myself out of this state of mind and i cannot.

Here is another portrait of adolfo made after a day of errands. I photograph my children because i am too scared to photograph anyone else.
