Are these those glasses, Taggart?

Riedel O Stemless Wine Glasses | Uncrate

14 Comments:

  • these are great! personally, i hate having to wash wine glasses particularly because of the stems. i've broken more than one stem off of a wine glass doing that.

now, if i drink wine (which is rare anyway) i drink it from one of my square tumblers. on special occasions, though, carol and i will use the giant mikasa wine globes we got as a housewarming gift.

  • The way I typically break wine glasses is being too enthusiastic with the scrubber and breaking the cup part from the inside--I appreciate how the stem kept my hand away from the cup when this has happened.

  • I'm suprised this company would make these. Particularly for white wines. Many white wines are served chilled and holding the glass by the stem keeps them chilled longer. Also, these people claim that their glasses are constructed in a way that enhances the flavor the wine. Total nonsense. Blind tastings have shown repeatedly that the glasses do not perform as advertised. And they cost like 4 -5 times what other perfectly good wine glasses cost.

  • how can a glass (stemmed or otherwise) 'enhance' the flavor of wine anyway?

plus, it would seem to me that if you're bogarting your wine for so long that it actually gets to a temperature that renders it undrinkable, you don't really want to drink it anyway.

i make comments like this, though, cause i'm hardly a wine drinker. a medium dark beer or a glass of vodka over ice with a twist is enough for me.

  • Yes they are those. Reidel "o".
I like them because they are not so
    top heavy.
And while it is proven that the wine does not actually improve the flavor of the wine there are benefits.
    Mostly physcological.
I think wine tastes better out of a thin crystal glass than a styrofoam cup. I think all beverages taste better when not in styrofoam. Except Coke.
Going back to improving flavor (not taste).
Your tongue tastes sweet, sour, bitter, salty. Flavor is in your nose.
If a glass has a wider bottom it allows the wine to airate and if it tapers off at the top it is funneled into your nose

  • Killy: Holding a wine glass with your hand wrapped around it can warm up the contents pretty quickly. Some glasses are designed to be held in such a way so as to release flavors due to warming the contents. Particularly desert wines.

Taggart: When I say "perfectly good wine glasses" I'm not referring to styrofoam cups. You can get wine glasses that are properly shaped in order to enhance flavor without spending what they charge. But you're correct about the psychological effects. Reidel are just great marketers. These stemless glasses are another example of their marketing efforts. Do wine glasses spill all over the carpet because they have stems or because someone knocks them over? These things aren't exactly sippy cups. They are just a (purely marketing) reason for someone who already has a perfectly good set of wine glasses to go out and buy another set. I would guess that Reidel's sales slowed or flattened out shortly before they came up with these things.

  • i drink wine straight out of recycled adobo glass containers - i don't know if the wine stays at the prescribed temperature or not but it goes down fast - i drink it in great quantities then proceed to moon my girlfriends - then i get sent home to sleep a deep snoring restless sleep only to wake up two hours later with a splitting headache searching for a glass of water - out of a pint glass

  • Killy,

That sounds really great. Unfortunately, I have a bad cold and I am down for the count. I'll take a rain check though. And I'll bring my banjo.
