Bluegrass

Sara's post about Nickel Creek reminded me of a great band that I have been listening to lately called Open Road. They play very traditional bluegrass. Click here for an idea as to just how traditional...

Like most good bands, they are not playing in Houston any time soon. If ever.

  • don't sweat it ethan.... pun intended.
No good bands ever come to Austin either, despite what most Austinites would have you believe.
Really, check it out, they are mostly (the good bands) cloistered up north and west.
Which is why Taggart and I dream of living there,
and for the lack of sweat too.

  • Colin - Thanks. I LOVE Old Crow. I'll have't heard of Jolie Holland, but I'll check her out. OCMS have actually played here twice since I have lived here. Once with Gillian Welch and once headlining at the Mucky Duck. Both shows were great and raucous enough to drown out the usual rude Houston music patrons who oddly insist on talking loudly through virtually every show I've gone to here.

Killy - Let's definitely set a date for some darts.

Taggart - I have seen some great shows in Austin and the crowds are much more appreciative. I saw the Gourds here once and they stopped after about the third song to announce: Ummm, hey y'all, we're gonna start playing our set now.
But you are right about the north. There is a good show in NYC just about every night. And whenever my favorite bands are on tour they play like 4 or 5 shows in the NY metro area and none in Houston.
