Mac & Target?

According to Engadget, ,Target is taking pre-orders for Mac-minis. How sweet it would be to see people buying a mac in a box no larger than the laundry detergent they've also got in their cart.

  • Target has an interesting electronics section. It doesn't carry whole computers, but Target has these "designer" computer accessories by the same guy who does some of their housewares. It also carries printers, toner, ink, CF cards and cables, etc. As far I can tell, they carry just about everything but CPUs and monitors. The mix of products that they carry and the lack of sales staff (unlike CompUSA, etc.) indicates to me that they are used to customers who are relatively sophisticated and not in need of hand-holding or in-house service and support.

It will be interesting to see how the barriers to entering Mac OS are breached by this. One of the principal things that most low-end or older PC users will face is keyboard and mouse. Most older PC's had USB ports but still used old-style serial interface mice and keyboards. I think this principally had to do with the OS. This is why they also clung onto the floppy drive--users were supposed to make a disk to recover the computer from serious errors.
