The world's first photo

The world's first photo was by Joseph Niepce
The other day Killy made reference to it. The link leads to more information. (Update: Thanks for noticing the busted link Ethan. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the link I intended to put in, which had the latest news about studies of the image. Instead I have updated it with a link to Google Images.)

  • This is not really a comment on the first photo. I stumbled upon this blog while looking for references to Ryan Kane via google. A lot of you might remember me from San Marcos. My name's Shane Denson. Anyway, I've lost touch with just about everyone from Texas (which is why I was looking for Ryan in the first place) as I've been living in Germany for the past six years. Before I write a novel, though, maybe someone who knows and remembers me could drop me a line at: shanedenson_at_web_dot_de. I'd really be interested in joining this blog. Hope to hear from you,
    Shane

  • Shane! Wow, what a surprise! I still think of "am I misunderstanding you correctly" although my dogggerel memory is probably in error.

  • For those of you in Austin: Barbara is starting her classes today. It was she that prompted me to mention Niepce photo on display at UT; it was a small contribution to the incredible 'talking tour' that Adolph gave Barb as we drove through UT proper and the outskirts of downtown on our way to Paul/Todd/Taggart's apartment complex.

  • the most interesting thing contained in the previous link is the challenge of reproducing the image itself for mass viewing since it sits in a vacuum sealed display under subdued lighting. i had no idea that an attempted reproduction by kodak wasn't released for public view for 25 years becuase it was such a distortion from the original.

for the record, i have never seen the original photo in person. has anyone else?

  • Taggart and I (Liz) have seen it. It's on display at the Harry Ransom Center at UT Austin. It's pretty much like what you see on that website, very difficult to decipher what is what-but it's still very cool. Then you can turn around (at the museum) and check out the Gutenberg Bible. It's an exhibit y'all should check out.
